Employment Programs

  • PLUS (Program for Life and Urban Skills)is the employment, training and development program that offers job seekers career training, workforce readiness, job development, career planning and placement services.

    The Career Skills portion includes workforce readiness that prepares job applicants to enter the workplace with resume’ writing, interviewing skills and job-search strategies. The job development segment provides customized workforce solutions to business partners by matching employer requirements with job seekers, and career planning assists job seekers with obtaining and retaining employment.

Community Economic Development

  • youth groupWest Las Vegas Business Development Initiative promotes business formation, job creation, and entrepreneurial opportunities for a non-traditional workforce, including ex-offenders and low-income individuals through the creation of a CDC, Revive Enterprises, Inc.

  • North Valley Revitalization Project promotes neighborhood and business revitalization in partnership with the City of North Las Vegas and the Nevada Banker’s Collaborative.

Youth Initiatives and Education

  • Youth Interactive Learning Center collaborates with the National Urban League, Casey Family Programs, and the Clark County Department of Family Services.  This youth interest-based, interactive academic enrichment program provides opportunities for leadership, socialization, and community engagement for at-risk foster care youth at the Pearson Community Center.  A network of stakeholders, including parents and school administration, are committed to the development of this program which the Urban League anticipates expanding in 2009 to include more high-risk youth referred from local agencies.

  • 21st Century Community Learning Center is a fifth year collaboration with local Agassi Academy and provides homework assistance, reading and math tutorials and academic enrichment activities. The program will collaborate with Ebenezer Church of God in Christ to serve 100 at-risk youth for FY2009-10.  Financial literacy is an enrichment component that invites students to learn about money concepts at an early age. Students learn how to create a money diary and spending planning in grades 1-5. CitiBank is our Financial Literacy funder. WIC Nutrition Education Center is the state’s “model program” for high-performing facilities safeguarding healthy living, wellness, nutrition for women, infants, and children.

  • Read and Rise is a national parent literacy program operating at multiple local sites which teaches parents strategies to support their child’s early literacy and reading skills. The program is on track to serve 158 parents and 237 children for FY2009-10 to improve children’s literacy and increase reading levels.

Promoting Intergenerational Health and Wellness

  • WIC Nutrition Education Center is the state’s “model program” for high-performing facilities safeguarding healthy living, wellness, and nutrition for women, infants, and children.

  • MLK Senior Center provides nutritious lunches, health screenings, transportation, home repair and modification, life-skills education, computer training, socialization and and recreation for 800 low-income older adults per year.

Self-Sufficiency Strategies for a Skilled, Productive Workforce

  • Family Development offers comprehensive case management services and referrals for homeless and low-income families in crisis.  Client assessments identify barriers to economic self-sufficiency and personal well-being.  Case managers have mentored and supported 269 individuals and families striving to achieve their goals thus far in FY2008-09.

  • Employment and Training provides job development, career training and planning, and placement services:

    • Job Development provides customized workforce solutions to business partners by matching employer requirements with job seekers.

    • Workforce Readiness prepares job applicants to enter the workforce, e.g. resume writing, interviewing skills, and job search strategies.

    • Job Placement assists job seekers to secure and retain employment.

  • Life Skills Training and Education offers 222 participants thus far in FY08/09 training to develop skills to live independently and advocate for themselves:

    • Curriculum includes a variety of topic areas such as managing a household, health and nutrition, locating community resources, budgeting, and financial literacy.

    • Participants explore vocational and secondary educational opportunities, including GED, ELL, and other classes held at various partner locations.

  • Prison Re-Integration (PRI) Program collaborates with the Southern Nevada Prisoner Re-entry Coalition and Nevada Department of Corrections to promote the successful return of ex-offenders to the community through pre and post release services including job training, education, and resources such as housing, transportation, substance abuse treatment, and mental health services.
